Choosing the right photographer

Modelling for a good photographer makes the whole process easier. Photographers who know what they want, have the technical expertise to set up a shoot properly, and who usually product the best images.

Previous Work

If you can, you should take a look at the photographer's work before you agree to work with him. A look at his or her previous images will tell you whether they make good use of lighting, whether their models look relaxed, and whether it's the type of photograph you would expect to see in a high quality magazine, or as part of an advert. If you are happy with what you see, you should arrange to meet the photographer, to have a chat about the type of work that they do.

Photography Style

A Photographer should have his/her own style. This is developed over years of experience, and this is usually quite easy to identify when you are looking at a selection of their pictures. Make sure you are comfortable with their style – if you work with them, you will be putting samples of your work in your portfolio, so it must be something you are confident will help to promote you as a model.

Choosing a photographer is important to your modelling career, and you need to be sure that you're making the right decision. Ask the photographer for the contact details of two or three models or publications that he or she has worked for. If they are hesitant about giving you this information, then think twice about using them.

Prints and Web Sites

Make sure you find out exactly what you will get from the photographer in terms of prints, digital images and web site representation. Most photographers have a website, with a selection of their portfolio images on display. If you can get the photographer to add your shoot to his web page, it may increase the likelihood of your being noticed by agencies and clients. If you are getting prints, find out exactly how many, and whether the photographer intends to charge you for them.

Whilst most of your work will come through your agency, you may still choose to do time for print shots or other work with photographers. It's important that you're happy with who you're modelling for.
