What are Tear sheets?

Tear sheet is a term used by advertising agencies to denote a page cut or torn from a publication to prove to the client that the advertisement was published. For the models, the tear sheets are the proof that you have appeared in print. They show agencies, bookers and photographers the jobs you have done in the past With the emergence of online advertising tear sheets often now appear in the form of PDF, known as a 'virtual tear sheet'.

In many cases, the photographer or publisher may provide you with a clean copy of the page or publication you appear in. When you accept a modelling job, ask if this is the case. If not, you will need to buy a copy for yourself. It is wise to buy more than one copy, so that you have a fall-back option should the original get lost or stolen.

Some quick tips:

-It's not really very wise to rip out the page of a magazine or newspaper as they might look unprofessional this way. Consider the presentation of your portfolio; it's one of the things that help to create an impression of you as a model, so remove the sheet carefully. If it needs to be trimmed, so that the edges are tidy, then do so with a guillotine so that the page looks professional.

-Always make sure you have noted which publication your picture was in, and when it was published. This will create a time-line for the reader, and also shows that you are keeping a close track of your work. If you have room in your portfolio, use the cover of the magazine to give this information. This links your work directly to the magazine, and may also jog the reader's memory if they remember the cover shot.
