Ringo, have a banana!
Q: What or who is your greatest inspiration?
A: In my personal life, probably my grandmother. She is in her eighties and is still pursuing photography. She has an incredible drive, as well as an amazing sense of humor and a love for life that I truly admire. More publicly, I look to directors like Werner Herzog, people whose love for their craft will drive them to almost insane lengths in order to achieve their goals.
Q: Why are you interested in fashion/modelling/photography?
A: I think I originally become interested in fashion during high school, a time when I wasn't all that happy with my body and the way I looked. Clothing was a way to become someone else, for a time, and also distract from whatever I saw as my flaws. Now I just think clothing is beautiful. There are so many possibilities in fashion. Also, I still like to use clothes to play characters, like a teen from the '70's or a housewife from the '60's, or just someone with way more confidence than you're feeling at the time. Why not? It can all be so much fun--as long as you vow never to take it too seriously!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a bit of a mish-mash these days. I've been in school and unemployed for so long that I can't really afford to buy a lot of the things I'd like, so I end up hunting down similar pieces in second hand stores and online. I really like the idea of mixing vintage finds with modern accessories. My favorite decade is easily the '70's, but I like to reference it subtly so it never looks like a costume--high waisted shorts, tall shoes, some fringe in all the right places.
Q: Does your blog help you in your career?
A: It has. Actually, it was through my blog that I was originally asked to be in BUST Magazine, and it was after being in the magazine that I was asked to contribute a small piece of writing to be published. Subsequently, I've written several small pieces for them, which no doubt helped land me my current internship at FADER Magazine. Overall, my blog has been an excellent tool when it comes to networking and meeting all sorts of wonderful, creative people interested in getting to know me.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time? – apart from blogging
obviously!
A: I love to take photos, on film, analog style. I'm also trying to get into Super8 film making, and I'd love to make some short films for my blog. I love to watch movies with my boyfriend, ooh, and I love watching Food Network!
Q: What is your advice for young people who are interested in a career in fashion/modelling/photography?
A: Stay true to who you are. It can be hard with so many people asking you to tweak this, change that, be who we want you to be. And it can be tempting to compromise in order to get jobs and gain favor. But the people who I see as being truly successful are the ones who refused to let themselves and their art be compromised, even if it meant a far more difficult path ahead of them. Also, write thank-you notes!
