First of all let me make this very blunt statement “you need to eat carbs!” Carbohydrates have had a lot of negative press over the years, there are plenty of diets out there which suggest that you should eat a minimum amount of carbs or totally neglect carbs all together. This is detrimental to your health and such diets should be treated with caution. Unfortunately low carb diets do work but they come at a price and cannot be sustained for a long period of time. Proof of this can be seen with the yo-yo weight games that celebrities play, so let’s actually learn from their mistakes and realise that quick weight loss from low carb diets also eventually leads to quicker weight gains.

The Right Carb Diet

Low carbohydrate diets exists due to the fact that there is some truth to the theory, however somewhere along the way the “right” low carb diet transformed into an unhealthy approach to weight loss. Most people fail to realise that most bad foods which should be eaten in moderation are actually carbohydrate based and can cause the body to store fat or even cause serious health risks;

So… let’s get to the basics. There are many reasons why we need to stretch:

  • White rice/pasta/bread
  • Sugar based foods and drink e.g. sweets/chocolate/fizzy drinks

These types of foods should be considered as part of a low carb diet as they will not provide any useful nutrients and can be considered as empty calories which they body can do without.

Carbohydrates should make up between 50% & 70% of your calorie intake for the day to ensure that the body can function effectively. The right type of carbs that should be eaten are:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Whole grains

Why the body needs carbohydrates

  • Energy
  • Parts of the nervous system rely exclusively on carbohydrates i.e. the brain
  • The help to burn and utilise fat and protein
  • Without carbs the body can lose muscle mass which can result in lower metabolism
  • The body cannot function optimally without carbs

When it comes down to it, most people know what type of carbohydrate diet to follow, it’s no mystery that we shouldn’t be eating mars bars and walkers crisps. However for those of us in this industry it’s a matter of looking our best so why put rubbish into the one thing that you are using to earn money......
